Altrusa St Augustine Supports Days for Girls Aid for Beirut
Covid19 travel restrictions result in extra costs for international aid program
Days for Girls (DfG) is an international organization that provides menstrual health care kits and education to girls and women in third world and developing countries around the world. The recent disasters in Beirut, and Lebanon’s failing economy, have increased the need for the long-lasting and environmentally friendly kits in that country.
Altrusa International Inc. of St. Augustine is seeking financial assistance for North Florida DfG volunteers to send up to 1,000 kits to displaced and impoverished girls and women in Beirut. The kits have been handmade by volunteers from Altrusa clubs, St. Augustine’s Memorial Presbyterian Church sew group, UF students and others from the North Florida area.
The Alachua DfG Sew Team in Gainesville will send the kits to a DfG staging point in Missouri for overseas shipping. Shipping costs are expected to be about $700. Prior to the pandemic, Alachua DfG recruited area world travelers to help deliver stuffed suitcases of kits to their foreign destinations for “free.” Covid travel restrictions have put a temporary halt to that effort.
Once the kits are received in Beirut, the local DfG coordinator will distribute them to those who need them, as well as provide menstrual health education and instructions on how to use the kits. Each kit is designed to last approximately three years and comes in a colorful fabric bag. It includes washable menstrual pads made from soft cotton, panties and attachable cotton shields to hold the pads, soap and other supplies.
Anyone who is interested in donating to help pay shipping costs may make a donation through this website ; mail a check to Altrusa St Augustine, PO Box 3372, St Augustine, FL 32085; or drop off a donation at Watson Realty, 3505 US Route 1 South, St Augustine, C/O Durinda Conner. All donations are tax deductible – Altrusa St Augustine is a 501 (C)(3) organization.
ABOUT DAYS FOR GIRLS
Days for Girls has provided safe, beautiful, washable, and long-lasting menstrual kits along with vital education materials to more than 1.5 million women and girls in more than 125 countries throughout the world. Prior to receiving these kits, the women and girls resorted to using such things as rags, mattress stuffing, or banana leaves to manage their menstruation.
In October 2017, Altrusa International approved Days for Girls as our International Service Project. This means that Altrusa Clubs throughout the world will be working on this project in small ways such as collecting travel-size bars of soap or in larger ways such as holding sewing days to build the kits – one of which is shown below.
